On 22nd September, The diabetes research institute kids club, and teacher Rachel Bayles spent a productive Saturday morning with John Cox, creating and drawing ideas for the mural ‘I Can’.
In small groups, under the direction of Rachel Bayles, the children discussed the things that they could do now and the things that they wished to do in the future. Each kids club member carefully drew their ideas on to paper and presented them to the rest of the group.
Dr Cates commented; “The children did an awesome job, the images they produced are powerful. It is wonderful to see that the children are dreaming of a great future for themselves. Some want to be doctors, which is fantastic! That means they can look after me when I retire.” He quipped.
As an example of how great murals look, John Cox presented images of work done by artist Shepard Fairey. The children immediately resonated with Shepards art and were excited to use his style as a guide for their mural ‘I can’.
“Next on the agenda is for the children to paint the mural at popopstudios,” said Nurse Anita Cates. “Oh, and I must remember to wear old clothes,” she laughed, ” I have a feeling there could be paint everywhere”.
